TURKEY, Three Gem Beaches of Turkey PDF Print E-mail
By Markele Smith

There is a country in the world that besides its natural and tourist attractions is subject of discussion when it comes to planning vacations because of its geographical location, literally where Europe end and Asia begins. Turkey is indeed situated in Eurasia, a landmass comprising regions in both continents. However, Turkey is also the land of legendary and biblical cities offering an incredible array of modern attraction and historical landmarks.

Izmir is not only the third most populated Turkish city, but also the ancient city of Smyrna, home to the Artemis Temple and Zeus Altar that, through research and excavations made by archaeologists between 1868 and 1904, was found historically associated to legendary city of Ephesus. Izmir is also the second largest port city of Turkey after the port of Istanbul and counts with numerous open-air cafes near at the Pasaport Quay historic district.

Others attractions in Izmir include guide tours to the Shrine of Virgin Mary or the ruins of ancient cities such as Odeon, the Bouleterion, and Ephesus. Historic daytrips can take you to the old Smyrna Acropolis and enjoy the Roman Agora, the Altar of Zeus, the Asclepion, or the temples of Dionysos and Athena. In Kadifekale (Mount Pagos), there is archaeological museum from which visitors can enjoy breath-taking views of the city.

Antalya, is the name given nowadays to the historic city of Anataolia, place at which travelers cannot only see Ottoman, Byzantine, and Roman monuments and ruins, but also find the gateway to the Turkish Riviera, a famous summertime destination thanks to its sunny sandy beaches embraced by the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Seas, so you can expect world-class marinas and resorts, but also affordable accommodations along its palm-lined avenues.

Even though, Keleici old quarter visitors can enjoy Antalya's narrow and picturesque cobble-stone streets within the former walled fortress comprising still wooden houses. However, beyond such walls, festivals invite to enjoy a good time, at either the Mediterranean International Music Festival, the Konyaalti Beach ParkKas-Demre Festival, or the yearly Antalya International Folk Music and Dance Festival.

Continuing our tour through Turkey, we can find Bodrum, short and modern name given to the ancient city of Halicarnassus (Halicarnassos) founded in the 13th century BC, although archeological research found that the foundation of Halicarnassus dates from around 5,000 years ago, although its former name was Caria, homeland of the Troyan defenders that Homer referred in the Ilia.

Bodrum is today a coastal city located in Southwest Turkey bordering with the Aegean Sea, although the city's airport (the Milas-Bodrum Airport) is situated closer to the Greek island of Kos. Bodrum was home to the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, mortuary monument built to honor the memory of King Mausolos, and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Despite the city is considered by locals a fishermen's town, Bodrum has a splendid Marina attracting countless visitors that alternate sunbathing with visits to the Castle of St. Petronium, the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, the ruins of the Amphi-theatre, and the Myndos Gate, one of the two Halicarnassus entrance doors.
