The historic city of Udaipur was founded by Maharana Udai Singh, son of the heroic Maharana Pratap of Mewar in the year 1568. His family, belonging to the Sisodia clan of Rajputs has since ruled the state of Mewar, with its Capital at Udaipur since it was built. It was recognized as a Princely State by the British in 1818 and then integrated
into the Indian Federation within State of Rajasthan upon Indian Independence in 1947. The current Rana (king) of Mewar is Mahendra Singh. The importance of Mewar and its relevance in Indian History can be judged by the fact that the Rana of Mewar was attributed a nineteen cannon salute in comparison to the seventeen canon sale attributed to the Kinds of Jaipur and Jodhpur, the neighboring Major Princely States of British India.
